Shhhh..... How joyful they must be when a tailor bird family thought a free stay at my house was guaranteed. This happened when we were not at home for one week during the end of April. They then built a nest on my 4 feet tall Lucky Bamboo tree. I am always a good guy who shall never order a court summons. But we are then being disturbed by each other, and this made my life a little bit busier, busy at observing them.
(27-April)
When we were home the first day, four little green eggs have been laid in the nest. It is a 12cm deep, and 5cm diameter cup-shaped nest. The narrow opening somehow means to keep most of their secret inside. I think they have done it for most of the time.
Tailor birds, by their name, are very good tailor. Leaves are pierced and fibre are drawn through them, just like how we do our stitching. Though someone had noted that the birds made knots, however no knots have been observed by me.
The female alone was found to incubate the eggs. The nest is so small and the mother had to squeeze herself and bent her tail upwards. I first thought the father had left since I had never seen him around, but I was wrong.
By the way, I am generous to offer them a free stay, and they offer me some interesting days in return.
That post was beautiful, rainfield. Made my heart stop :)
ReplyDeleteYou are very lucky to have them as guests and they are lucky to have such an accommodating host..
Loshini
wow what a special guest you are hosting ya :) cant wait to read more...
ReplyDeleteSo the male bird is like some man? Go gallivating when he is needed at home? LOL
ReplyDeleteI had lots of this bamboo when I was in Singapore, but the birds didn't come to my hotel. You were lucky.
My parents grew a lot of orchids, but the North Borneo was his favourite.
I have problem with the birds "Pipit". They make their nests on the roof of our house. Every morning it is really disappointing to see the birds poops on the floor.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting, you have some new friends who came to visit. I hope you will be able to catch the hatching of the babies.
ReplyDeleteLove it, love it! What a fantastic story, and can't wait to read more..
ReplyDeleteI would take your "yard-guests" over human ones..and btw--just receive your weather today, thanks!
Rainfield, I love our new guests, they have made your home their home. Beautiful photos too.
ReplyDeleteLoshini:
ReplyDeleteIf this post made your heart stop, then your heart will be stopped for more than one time, I bet.
fufu/AVCr8teur/Icy:
The following one will be getting more and more interesting. Stay tune.
Ann:
The male actually came back to feed the chicks, just like most of us, the man.
Willie:
I have many sparrows and swallows as my neighbour. I do not have much problem living with them.
By the way, there is a swallow nest being built under the roof outside my house. Hopefully it is a success one.
Poetic Shutterbug:
The chicks are beautiful and cute in the next post.
Rainfield,
ReplyDeleteA most interesting bird. Many nests are interesting to try and figure how they were built. I found one last year that had a 30 m.piece of fishing line I had left out when changing it on a pole all wrapped carefully in a circle.
I am truly amazed to learn that a bird can stitch through leaves to make a nest. And how blessed you are to have this happening at your house where you can see. :)
ReplyDeleteVery interesting! Thanks so much for sharing this with us! Great photos of her hard work!
ReplyDeleteSo sweet! I have heard of these, but now I get to see your friend.
ReplyDeletethat is so awesome, having them as guest must really be a heartwarming and inspiring experience.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice that they don't mind you're watching them but, after all, you are being a very nice landlord!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice nest they have there. They tailored it very well :)
ReplyDeleteBuddy, check out my post tomorrow. You are in for a game :)
If you weren't so generous how much would their rent cost? =D
ReplyDeleteWow.. the first time seeing such a lovely nest, a very unusual one too with neat stitches. They must be feeling more at home around your home than anywhere else.
Can't waitta see these birdies and their kids and hear more stories about them. ^__^
Yes unusual nest. Nice post mate.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the part II
What lovely guests you have, so very neat and tidy. I was entranced by the nest. How kind of you to offer the family a free vacation. You will soon have more guests!
ReplyDeleteWow, that is truly amazing.
ReplyDeleteThat is wonderful that you both are comfortable in each others space.
The birds are aptly named for their "tailoring" skills used in nest building.
ReplyDeleteThis bird is a very unique kind, i.e. a good tailor. How clever of them. You are a kind hearted host. When birds fly into your home and build a nest there, I guess they will bring you better opportunites and good luck too :)
ReplyDeleteThat is very kind of you to provide free lodging for them. Waiting for the part 2!
ReplyDeleteThis is just amazing! Your uninvited house guests are really very interesting creatures. I'm glad they have become welcome guests.
ReplyDeleteAw... I've read about these birds, now I get to see a family doing their thing because you like to watch for me.
ReplyDeleteAunt rescued a baby tailorbird from the mean outdoor cats who had already ravaged the nest. The biggest issue - how to feed it, since it's very small. I'm not sure if the parents feed recently caught insects just like that or after regurgitating the digested insect.
ReplyDeleteHelp, somebody.
These photos are amazing. Thanks. I have joinedyour blog as I want to see more from you. Margaret
