As their name implies, other than walking on mudflats, mudskippers are able to skip by using their strong pair of pectoral fins. I heard of this a long long time ago, this was the first time I witnessed this exciting stunt today.
I was actually hunting for birds along Perai River this afternoon, but then this mudskipper simply diverted my attention.
It continued to skip one after another, either aiming to entertain me or to have a good exercise.
Let see together.
It applied force on the pectoral fins, and got set to catapult it self,
and,
No, I never seen a flying mudskipper. I do not think I have seen any kind of mudskipper. LOL! Great post and photos.
ReplyDeleteI had never seen a mudskipper before. Great observation and photography skills to capture this awesome creature in the act!
ReplyDeleteI say its a wonderful party trick, and you were lucky to be able to capture an actual skip on camera. Well done.
ReplyDeleteyou must be very elated to capture the fying mudskipper. i've never seen one before and i am delighted to see it here. :)
ReplyDeleteWow! I have never seen a mudskipper before, let alone a flying one! You captured great shots.
ReplyDeleteThats a good action photo. Nice capture!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen mud-skippers in Thailand but have in Malaysia. I fancy they may well be here too-need to keep my eyes peeled down in the mangroves I fancy.
ReplyDeleteYou are so very correct! I have never seen anything like this before, and it is definitely interesting. This is one of the great action shots I've seen.
ReplyDeleteeileeninmd: This is truly Malaysia.
ReplyDeleteDiane: You are right, it takes
great observation and patience to get some special.
Glennis: Ha Ha!! No trick at all, solely luck that works.
Cher: There will be a day the mudskippers would have skipped further and further, you may then see them in Singapore.
Cheryl: I am right, nobody is so lucky as me initially, but everyone has the same luck finally. LOL.
Kirigalpoththa: Action packed.
Mike: I strongly believe they are there in Thailand,at least in Southern Thailand. Waiting for your good news.
that's some nice shots of the mudskippers...you have captured it so wonderfully!
ReplyDeleteYou've done great to capture them in the element. Very good, rainfield. Sometimes the joy such distractions brings is better...
ReplyDeleteIt definitely is skipping and flying in the mud. It is doing justice to its name.
ReplyDeleteMy first time seeing them was when I visited Morib Beach sometime early this year.
ReplyDeleteNice photos!
ReplyDeleteWhich part of Perai River? If I'm not mistaken, there are many fly or un-fly mudskipper at the Permatang Pauh River (correct me if I'm wrong).
Anyway, thanks for sharing...
Have a nice weekend!
great follow thru...and i agree with you that it takes patience to wait and to make these sequential shots.

ReplyDeleteGreat capture of an intriguing creature!
ReplyDeleteRatty: Hahahahahaha.... I am so correct, but have to admit, still need a lot of improvement on the photography skill.
ReplyDeleteflyingstars: In fact, the mudskipper rolled, walked and skipped in front of me. It was a nice day to me.
Gallicissa: Distractions sometimes bring us surprises, it is true at the end because I did not get decent pictures on birds.
Autumn Belle: If it needs to continuosly fly and skip in order to do justice to its name, its life is to be too tough. LOL.
Mei Teng: You mean you have seen them skipping and flying. You are another lucky one.
Robo: It is somewhere nearby the bridge, along the river bank at Seberang Jaya. There is a variety of birds around, monkey, crabs, reptiles, etc can be spotted as well.
yen: It was 2pm by the river bank. It needs more than patience. LOL.
Salitype: Your posts are very educational as well. BTW, I hope we can learn from each other, and get to know each other's place by then.
Bengbeng: It is once upon a time...
Petit Eyekiss: Then it must be an eye opener to you. Welcome abroad.
That flying mudskipper looks so beautiful, I like how he is twirling in the picture from jumping. Amazing capture.

I didn't know that it's called mudskipper. I always see it in the discovery documentary. It's rather fascinating 'cos it can breathe out of water. if I'm not mistaken, it breathes in the mud.
ReplyDeleteI always like to say that perhaps human actually evolved from this creature as fetus has gill too before it is born!
